New Vulnerability Discovered in BitLocker: What Does This Mean for Your SME?
Source: Tweakers
Good news is scarce in the IT field, but unfortunately, we must inform you about a new vulnerability that has recently been discovered. This concerns BitLocker, the encryption software that comes standard on many Windows computers and protects your data. There is now a tool, called YellowKey, that can bypass this security.
What exactly does this entail? With the YellowKey tool, which runs from a USB stick, unauthorized individuals can gain access to the data on a Windows computer or server. The bad news is that the encryption itself is not the culprit; the tool exploits a specific weakness in how computers handle encryption. The good news is that an attacker needs physical access to the computer to use this tool. Therefore, your data cannot simply be cracked remotely.
What does this mean concretely for you as an SME entrepreneur? Although physical access is required, it remains important to be vigilant. 'Physical access' can mean someone taking your laptop, or even an employee with malicious intent gaining access. Therefore, ensure that computers containing sensitive information are always well-protected against theft and unauthorized access. Consider, for example, a robust lock for laptops, or restricting access to rooms where sensitive equipment is located. Furthermore, keeping your Windows operating system up-to-date remains crucial. Microsoft is working on solutions for these types of vulnerabilities.
